Muskets were an essential weapon in the 17th century, although long and cumbersome for fighting on board a ship, they came into their own when fighting ship to ship or on land.

The double barrel flintlock shotgun became widely used soon after the French and Indian War (1760). Its effectiveness as a fowling piece was quickly acknowledged by sportsmen. Additionally, the advantage of a second shot also proved beneficial in military contexts.
