The Sheppey Pirates were invited to a Wassail festival, where our task was to make as much noise as possible, which is something we excel at! We brought a variety of muskets and pistols and, of course, tasted many of the beers and ciders available. Wassail is a hot beverage and a tradition of singing and drinking that occurs during Christmas and New Year. The word "wassail" originates from the Old Norse term for "good health".
The drink - Wassail is a hot beverage made with spiced ale, cider, wine, honey, and sugar. It's often served in a large communal bowl and can include baked apples.
The tradition - Wassailing involves singing carols and drinking to the health of others. It's often accompanied by dancing and merrymaking and can take place in an orchard or at people's homes. The tradition has pagan roots and has been practiced in Britain for centuries.
The purpose - Wassailing was used to ensure a good harvest in the following year. It was also a way to give charity by visiting people's homes.
